parlimentary elections 2006 was particularly heartwarming. it showed that there was more to life than money, and singaporeans agree. to hell with 80 million dollars worth of upgrading, give me chiam see tong.
it's a different era of politics, but the pap doesn't seem to have registered that. the promise of a better tomorrow has lost much of its appeal to the yuppies of the 21st century as compared to the kampong-living citizens of 1959. elections is no longer a one-off affair, it continues throughout the five years. if a politician loves the residents like he says, he's got to show it in more ways than turning up at their door once every half a decade, coincidentally always days before polling day. if the party's core interest is the people, maybe their rally truck should have more than a pre-recorded message blaring from attached loudspeakers. the difference between a pap truck and an opposition truck, is that the opposition truck has party members addressing the residents from it. the pap truck? just the indian driver lah, and maybe an indian friend. it's not to judge the capabilities of the parties, but it's a show of pap arrogance. to get the people on your side, you've got to show that you care. its not like the residents of hougang and potong pasir are so rich that 180 million is insignificant. their unwavering support is a bond of true love, which chiam see tong and low thia kiang have rightly earned. people now are no fools. they know when you really care, and when you're just trying to gain statistics for your party.
that said, i'm glad pap is back in power. now it's time to sit back and wait for the bus hikes and tax increases to come.
